We hold an annual obedience trial every June. This is a competition for AKC registered dogs, and includes novice, open, and utility classes. Please contact us for information on entering. Closing date for entries is about 10 to 14 days before the trial. Spectators (without dogs, please) are welcome - it's a great way to see how well-trained a dog can be!
Show and Go Saturday, December 6, 2008 A Show and Go is very similar to the run-throughs described on our 'Obedience' page. It may or may not be a "real" judge, but is typically someone with a lot of competition experience. There is no training in the ring permitted during a Show and Go. There are no points, placements, ribbons or prizes, but it is a good way to prepare for competition, or stay in practice. Once you have completed your runs you are free to leave. There is a 'Pre-novice' class for those people/dogs who have never competed.
CGC testing Saturday, November 22, 2008 This is an AKC program that tests the good manners of a dog. It is open to all dogs age 6 months and older, whether purebred or not. Ten different tests evaluate how the dog behaves in common situations - walking on a loose leash, behavior around other people and dogs, and how he or she reacts to distractions. Those who pass receive a form from the evaluator, which you can send to the AKC for a certificate, suitable for framing. AKC also has 'CGC' patches available for purchase. Passing a CGC test is often a requirement if you're interested in having your dog become a therapy dog. We usually have Canine Good Citizen tests once a year, either in the spring or the fall. Pre-registration is strongly suggested, and there is a nominal fee. See the flyer at the link above for more information. One of our obedience classes is specially geared to the requirements of the Canine Good Citizen test. Please contact us for information on when our next class will be starting.
